Areteia is developing dexpramipexole, a first-in-class oral eosinophil maturation inhibitor for eosinophilic asthma.
Dexpramipexole blocks eosinophil maturation in the bone marrow, thereby decreasing peripheral blood and tissue eosinophil levels—addressing the root cause of eosinophilic asthma.
Unlike existing injectable biologic treatments, dexpramipexole offers patients a convenient oral alternative with potential for better adherence and disease control.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials have demonstrated significant reductions in blood eosinophil counts and meaningful improvements in lung function compared to placebo.

Moderate to Severe Eosinophilic Asthma
Eosinophilic asthma is a distinct phenotype characterized by elevated eosinophil levels in the blood and airways. Patients with this condition often experience severe symptoms and require more aggressive treatment strategies. Dexpramipexole targets the underlying eosinophilia to provide meaningful disease control.
Areteia Therapeutics was launched in July 2022 as a spinout from Knopp Biosciences, a Pennsylvania-based biotechnology company with a strong track record in drug development. The company was created in partnership with Population Health Partners and backed by leading investors including Bain Capital Life Sciences, Access Biotechnology, GV, ARCH Venture Partners, Saturn Partners, and Sanofi.
